2010 Meritorious Websites Award – Little Prince is Depressed

Depression becomes a prevalent illness. Most of the general public do not know what it is about, and would not recognize the need to seek help.? The World Health Organization warns that “depression is the leading cause of disability as measured by YLDs and the 4th?leading contributor to the global burden of disease (DALYs) in 2000. By the year 2020, depression is projected to reach 2nd place of the ranking of DALYs calcuated for all ages, both sexes. Today, depression is already the 2nd cause of DALYs in the age category 15-44 years for both sexes combined.” Provided that depression is always a high risk factor to suicide and contrastingly a strong stigmatization to the illness, the CSRP has created an innovative educational website entitled “Little Prince Is Depressed” aiming to de-stigmatize biases on the illness by providing accessible, in-depth, easy-to-understand and evidence-based information on depression and common stressors among adolescents and young adults.

We understand public’s limited knowledge on depression could be one of the sources of biases and delayed help-seeking behaviour.? We believe education can be effective to convey our messages of de-stigmatization and help-seeeking.? Taking the idea of folktale letting learners learn a message from oral stories, we created an evidence-based website (i.e. Little Prince is Depressed) with an online cartoon character named, The Little Prince, with colourful animated pictures and story framework. It was portrayed that the Prince has been through journeys of depression (a.k.a emotional flu in the website) and learned skills to help himself alongside. Targeting people with mild to moderate depression and general public, the Prince also acts as a virtual companion with the readers online.

The “Little Prince is Depressed” consists of a number of modules:

  1. Introduction – cause of depression, symptoms and how it relates to suicide
  2. Scale – measure your level of mental health
  3. Treatment – antidepressant, therapies and alternative methods
  4. Health life – how to relax, mood management and healthy lifestyle
  5. Sharing – how to deal with education problems, work stress and interpersonal relationship
  6. Post office – e-card and wallpaper

The mental health literacy of depression has been transferred and enhanced via a journal travelling character and has been proved well receiving. The “Little Prince is Depressed” website has won awards in recognizing its effectiveness in the community, especially to children and teenagers. It has also been receiving good comments from overseas mental health professionals.

This year, the website has won one of the tenth 2010 Meritorious Websites Contest.
